THREE IN ONE
THE UNIFICATION OF OUR CHURCHES |
A Letter from Fr. Ian
Dear Parishioners, When I became Administrator/Pastor of all three parishes in LaPorte, my vision was for a unified Catholic presence in our city that would be a more genuine witness to Christ and His Church. I have photocopies of letters from 1921 from parishioners urging the Bishop of that time to unite the Catholic parishes of La Porte. They speak of the great good it would do for the future of Catholicism in our city. I would like to think they are looking at us, from heaven, with great pleasure today... Unity Prayer Come, Holy Spirit, Come. - Grant us your love and joy as we strive to serve the poor and one another. - Grant us your peace and patience to know and trust in the future mission you have planned for us. - Grant us your gentleness and kindness as we listen to and acknowledge the feelings and opinions of each person in our parish family. - Grant us your faithfulness and self-control as we learn what it means to truly be your disciple. - Grant us your goodness to view this moment of renewal as an invitation to build up the foundation which has been given to us: a vibrant, new community of faith, united in mission and dedicated ever more to the fruitful building up of your Kingdom. Amen. |
For the past five years, Father Ian has been leading our LaPorte Catholic family of disciples toward a single parish with three beautiful and unique churches. We have worked hard to combine many of our committees and commissions to benefit our parish family. What is our next step? How do we grow stronger as a parish family and embrace our call to discipleship? The answer is this: Bring our communities into further communion with each other as a single, unified parish. Since 2016 when Fr. Ian was named administrator of St. Peter, St. Joseph, and Sacred Heart churches, we have been moving toward becoming one parish family. We continue to draw closer while still respecting and cherishing our differences, history, and the many talents that come from our diversity. What are some of the ministries that are working together from all three churches? How has this collaboration helped us to be Christ for others? A maintenance-based parish is concerned with maintaining the status-quo and relying upon the mindset, “we have always done it this way.” A mission-based parish thinks of creative and new ways to reach the lost and engage its members, with the focus on making disciples. While we may not consider ourselves a maintenance-based parish at this time, we will easily drift into maintenance unless we have a mission. What is this mission? What vision do we have for ourselves as a united parish in the future? Download and read the full article at the following link: |
