Taking care of one another as we get back to public Mass
More and more we are hearing that infections with Covid 19 can occur with few signs or symptoms for some people while it can be devastating for others. With that in mind a look at the proper way to wear masks seems in order. Wearing them correctly will help us to protect one another as well as stay in the guidelines put fourth by Bishop McClory and the governor. Unless you work in the medical field, wearing a mask is not second nature and can feel a little awkward until you get used to it. Hopefully this written review and the video at: https://www.nbcchicago.com/top-videos-home/how-to-wear-a-face-mask-properly/2262503/ will help us all “do it right."
Step1: Wash your hands before putting your mask on. Use hand sanitizer for a thorough 20 second wash.
Step 2: Put your mask on by pulling OVER your nose and mouth and UNDER your chin making sure it fits comfortably around your face. There should be NO gaps between your face and the mask.
According to the CDC, cloth face coverings should do the following things when put on correctly:
Step 3: Every time you touch your face it is recommended that you wash your hands again.
Step 4: Once the mask is on and adjusted avoid touching it. If you do have to touch it, use hand sanitizer again after you are done. When it is time for Holy Communion do not touch the cloth/mouth part of your mask. Take the mask off from the back or over the ears by touching only the elastic/ties once the Eucharistic minister has passed. If you can have some hand sanitizer in your pocket, once you have received the Host and replaced your mask, use it to wash your hands before touching any surfaces.
Step 5: Leave your mask on until you are outside the church. Disposable masks should not be taken off until you can either throw them away or put them into your own car. Consider them contaminated and treat them as such, thus anything they touch is now contaminated too. Cloth masks should be washed after each use- machine wash with detergent in hot water and then dry on high heat. This cleans and tightens the weave of the cloth.
